Packard Takes Flight

We were lucky enough to have author Susan Levine visit our entire 2nd grade in the library to discuss her book, Packard Takes Flight. She presented to us the steps she took to create her book, from research to the publishing process. She also was accompanied by the illustrator of the book, Erin McCauley Burchwell, who showed us the hard work that goes into creating visual representations of the text. Students enjoyed various activities, including getting to meet an actual peregrine falcon!!

The Seven Continents

Today, students enjoyed putting the seven continents in the correct locations on a map. 2A has been working hard to learn about the geographical features that make up their world.

Bar Graphs

2A has been discovering how to chart data by using different types of graphs. For this activity, students were divided into groups and polled their classmates based on a chosen category (i.e. favorite vegetable, sport, season, etc.) Once they tallied their classmates' choices, they transferred that data to a bar graph with a title, labels, and scales.

To extend the activity, students wrote questions about their graphs. These questions were answered by their classmates, returned to the question/graph maker, and graded by that student.

Star of the Week

Henry was our latest Star of the Week! Henry's classmates loved learning more about him. We enjoyed hearing about some of Henry's favorite things and seeing pictures of him with his family and playing sports.

Iroquois Canoes

To support our study of the Iroquois tribe, 2A used their arts and crafts skills to create canoes. First, they cut out a pattern and glued the pieces of the boat together. Then, having punched holes in the canoe, students sewed yarn in and out of the holes. Finally, they got to decorate the canoe and even created people to put into the boat. Great work, 2A!

Happy Birthday, Claudia!

This week we celebrated Claudia K.'s birthday! Her mother came in with special treats, donuts and water, and read a story to the class. We had a wonderful time and wish Claudia a very happy birthday!
